Romans: The Good News About Jesus
Romans 1:1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God
The book of Romans is Paul’s explanation of the gospel. It starts with a description of the state of man without the gospel. This is followed by a description of the revelation of the righteousness of God. This righteousness is available to us through faith. Faith leads to reconciliation and peace with God. Through the grace of righteousness, by faith, sin and death are done away. Sin being dealt with frees us from slavery to sin. Since we are free there is no point in feeling obligated to the law. Instead of the law we have the Spirit of God within us. The Spirit gives us hope and security in grace. There is one church. Jesus came through Israel but gentiles are not second class Christians. God is going to save everyone who belongs to him. Then Paul describes our response to the grace of God in our personal lives and in the church and in the world. Finally, he gives some instruction on how we live with each other in this new life.
Paul
Acts 9:1-31, “This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.”
a servant
Exodus 21:2-6, “If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything. If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free. But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free, then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.”
of Jesus Christ
Philippians 2:6-11, “Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.”

Luke 14:16-24, “Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, “Come, for everything is now ready.“ But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, “I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.” Another said, “I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.“ Still another said, “I just got married, so I can’t come.“ The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, “Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.” “Sir,” the servant said, “what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.” Then the master told his servant, “Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.”
an apostle
1 Corinthians 12:27-30, “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?”

Acts 13:1-3, “Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.”

1 Corinthians 15:3-4, “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.”
