John 2:1-11 The wedding at Cana

This is the first miracle recorded in John’s gospel. It highlights Jesus’ deity as being supernaturally in control of everything and his humanity in being part of normal everyday lives.

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,

and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

Mary, Jesus’ mother sets us a good example. Whatever the issue let us take it to Jesus first.

4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

Jesus asks her about motivation and we should check ourselves when we bring requests to God, why are we involving God in our issues? Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. James 1:6-8, James 4:3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Would we see God working in our lives, the water of necessity turned into the wine of joy, our lack filled to overflowing? Do whatever He tells you. What has He told us? Love your enemies, give without thought of reward, forgive all, seek the kingdom of God instead of my own kingdom, don’t worry, don’t judge, ask the Lord to fulfill your needs, Matthew 5,6 and 7.

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from                 twenty to thirty gallons.

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

The servants fulfill the Lord’s command, to the brim, that is, completely as they are able. Whatever we do for the Lord let us do it to the best of our ability.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

Do whatever He tells you. How would taking the master of the banquet a drink of water help with the lack of wine? Often we only understand in hindsight why God asks certain things from us.

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into             wine. He did not realize   where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water              knew. Then he called the bridegroom        aside

Jesus didn’t make any fuss or announcement, no show at all in the working of this miracle and He works this way in our lives transforming us day by day often without us even noticing.

10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too                 much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

The master of the banquet didn’t know that he had Jesus to thank for the excellent wine. Lots of blessings flow through our lives, let’s remember that though they come via human hands their origin is with God.

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his              glory; and his          disciples believed in him.
