John 1:29-34
- The Lamb of God
Genesis 22:8 Hebrews 11:17-19 The promise of God to Abraham extends to the whole family of faith. We believe, with Abraham, that God will provide, has provided for us in Jesus, himself the lamb, the perfect sacrifice.
Exodus 12:1-11 The Passover is a foreshadowing of Jesus’ work on the cross. On the Passover God made a distinction between those who belonged to him and those who didn’t. On the cross Jesus provides the propitiation for our sin that causes those who believe to cross over from death to life.
1 Corinthians 5:7 Just as the angel of death passed over those who were inside houses marked with blood, Jesus causes death to pass over us since we are behind the door marked with his blood.
Isaiah 53:7 He (Jesus) was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth.
1 Peter 1:18-21 This world and everything deemed valuable in it is passing away. Even the traditions that are passed on to us from our forebears have no power in the face of eternity. But the perfect sacrifice of Jesus has power for us beyond this world. Jesus was always, from eternity past, going to die for sins. Before Jesus, people didn’t know how God could forgive sins but now we know. Knowing the sacrifice of Jesus, and his resurrection, and the glory the Father has given him, we trust him to save us and bring us, ultimately, to where he is in glory.
Revelation 5 The Revelation of the Lamb.
- Who takes away the sin of the world
Psalm 51:4 Sin that condemns us is against God alone. We can offend our neighbor but only offense against God entails condemnation.
Genesis 3:15 God’s promise of salvation comes immediately after the first sin.
Romans 3:23 Everyone sins.
Hebrew 9:11-14 Christ is our high priest and our perfect sacrifice. The Aaronic priests had to offer sacrifices over and over endlessly because their ministry was not effective to remove sins, it was only a shadow of the better way to come. Jesus is the permanent high priest of a new covenant that he sealed with his own blood, a perfect sacrifice, offered once and covering everyone who believes. The point of all this is the restoration of creation from a fallen state to a renewed state. We are in the time between the declaration of salvation and the coming completion of salvation.
