The Word of God

What is a word? It is more than letters on a page or sounds in a mouth. A word is a conduit from one soul to another. It is the sharing of my being with the beings of the hearers/readers that creates a commonality called communion. The perfect Word is perfection Himself sharing with us; creating communion with us.

          This is how God creates.

Genesis 1:1-3, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

          And again,

John 1:1-4, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.”

          So now,

Hebrews 11:3, “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.”

Jesus Christ, fully man and fully God, is the Word of God.

Revelation 19:13, “He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.”

Revelation 19:15, “Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations.”

Eph 6:17b, “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”

John 6:63, ” It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.”

The communion granted by the Word of God between the people of God and God is transmitted using  the printed page as an instrument. A cello transmits music but is not itself music. But while it is playing it is inextricably tied to the music. Similarly, the Bible as the Word of God is Christ himself transmitted to our hearts.

Chapter  1

  • verse 1- In the beginning  was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Strong’s concordance  – beginning

ἀρχή archḗ, ar-khay’; from G756; (properly abstract) a commencement, or (concretely) chief (in various applications of order, time, place, or rank):—beginning, corner, (at the, the) first (estate), magistrate, power, principality, principle, rule.

The Kalam Cosmological Argument

(1) Everything that has a beginning of its existence has a cause of its existence.
(2) The universe has a beginning of its existence.
Therefore:
(3) The universe has a cause of its existence.
(4) If the universe has a cause of its existence then that cause is God.
Therefore:
(5) God exists.

Genesis 1:1

Strong’s concordance – word

λόγος lógos, log’-os; from G3004; something said (including the thought); by implication, a topic (subject of discourse), also reasoning (the mental faculty) or motive; by extension, a computation; specially, (with the article in John) the Divine Expression (i.e. Christ):—account, cause, communication, concerning, doctrine, fame, have to do, intent, matter, mouth, preaching, question, reason, reckon, remove, say(-ing), shew, speaker, speech, talk, thing, none of these things move me, tidings, treatise, utterance, word, work.

Jesus is God’s communication to us

The Word was with God – not the same person

The Word was God – the same nature

  • verse 2 – The same was in the beginning with God.

These cornerstones/foundations were with God (the third person) in the beginning.

From the Athanasian Creed – We worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; Neither confounding the persons nor dividing the substance.

Genesis 1:26

  • verse 3 – All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Hebrews 1:2, Colossians 1:15-20
