The Attributes of God

Omnipresence

Psalm 139:7-12

Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,”
Even the night shall be light about me;
Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,
But the night shines as the day;
The darkness and the light are both alike to You.

Omnipresence simply means that God is present everywhere. As the Psalmist says, God is in Heaven and in Hell. No journey can take us away from Him and no circumstance can dim His light. As Paul said,

Romans 8:38-39

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

 God fills and surpasses all of creation, the entire universe. Our galaxy is so wide that a beam of light starting at one side of galaxy would take one hundred-thousand years to reach the other side. And our galaxy is only one of many millions. All of this is not bigger than God.

Jeremiah 23:23-24

Am I a God near at hand,” says the Lord,
“And not a God afar off?
Can anyone hide himself in secret places,
So I shall not see him?” says the Lord;
“Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord.

1Kings 8:27

“But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built!

And yet, this same God dwells with us.

Matthew 1:23

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

Acts 17:24

God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.

In fact, our God dwells in us.

1Corinthians 6:19

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

The presence of God with us and in us creates a life for us not otherwise possible.

Psalm 16:11

You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

The presence of God through the blood of Christ means that we never have to hide from God like Adam and Eve.

Genesis 3:8

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

When they had sinned their instinct was to hide from God’s presence. But we have the consolation of repentance to always return us to His presence.

Psalm 51:10-11

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Your presence,
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

It is not enough to know that God is everywhere. I must train my thoughts to recognize that He is here, now.

“That we should establish ourselves in a sense of GOD’s Presence, by continually conversing with Him. That it was a shameful thing to quit His conversation, to think of trifles and fooleries.

That we should feed and nourish our souls with high notions of God, which would yield us great joy in being devoted to Him.” – Brother Lawrence, The Practice of the Presence of God.
