The Attributes of God
Omnipotence
Revelation 19:6
And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!
The Greek word παντοκράτωρ (pantokrator) translated omnipotent in Revelation 19:16 is elsewhere translated almighty. Strong’s concordance defines it as, “he who holds sway over all things; the ruler of all; almighty”.
Genesis 35:11
Also God said to him: “I am God Almighty.
Here is the Hebrew word אֵל שַׁדַּי (El Shaddi) El meaning God and Shaddi meaning Almighty.
The scriptures clearly state the omnipotence of God. What does omnipotence mean?
Isaiah 40:6-31 Gives some sense of the disparity between the power of God and all other powers.
Job says that no purpose of God can be withheld.
Job 42:1-6
“I know that You can do everything,
And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.
This is God’s universe and He does things His way. And God does whatever he wants.
Philippians 2:5-13
for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
Romans 9:14-24
Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?
Do I think that God’s power ought to be subject to my whims? Do I truly trust in God’s goodness, wisdom and love for me so that whatever my circumstance I can rest upon the sovereignty of God? If I need strength shouldn’t I go to someone who has strength?
Looking at the irresistible power of God in light of His goodness I read Romans 8:28,
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” with new appreciation for who it is that is working out my circumstances.
In John 5:1-8 Jesus heals a man who was an invalid for thirty-eight years. The man had no power to help himself and no one to help him. When Jesus came to him did he have any idea what was about to happen to him? Of course we are like that man, perfectly helpless in our impotence. Unlike that man who had to wait for Jesus to show up we have Christ’s power available to us right now. The miracle of salvation is completely beyond the power of men. It is the giving of life where only death was. What has history taught us if not that man, when left to himself, is desperately depraved and utterly incapable of approaching God? It requires an Almighty Sovereign to accomplish the work of transformation that changes us from death to life.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
