Part 2 – Jesus is The Word of God
Ephesians 6:17
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
We understand the Word of God to be the Bible and of course it is, but it is also Jesus Christ himself as revealed by John the apostle.
John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Jesus is the very word that was spoken at the beginning, the word that created everything.
Genesis 1:3
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
The Word of God is the Sword of the Spirit. Jesus told us that he brought a sword to earth.
John 10:34
“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.”
And just as he brought a sword at his first appearing so when he returns he will bring a sword that comes out of his mouth, the Word of God.
Revelation 19:11-16
I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: king of kings and lord of lords.
Who is this heavenly sword called the Word of God? Jesus’ office is the Christ, which means Anointed One. In the Old Testament three offices were anointed, priests, kings and prophets. Jesus is our Prophet, our High Priest and our King.
A prophet speaks to the people the words of God. A priest speaks to God on behalf of the people and a king leads the people.
Jesus prophesied his return
Matthew 24:30:31
Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
Jesus is our High Priest
Hebrews 4:14-15
Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Psalm 110:4
The Lord has sworn
And will not relent,
“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”
Jesus is LORD
Revelation 19:16
And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:
KING OF KINGS AND
LORD OF LORDS.
